Villa Vie Unveils Second Residential Ship “Legacy” as Fleet Expansion Accelerates

With Odyssey more than 85% sold, Villa Vie is preparing for its next chapter. But one question remains unanswered: What ship will become Legacy?

Villa Vie Residences has officially announced plans to expand its fleet with a second residential cruise ship, Villa Vie Legacy, scheduled to enter service in early 2029.

Rather than replacing the company’s inaugural ship, Villa Vie Odyssey, Legacy is being positioned as a premium sister ship that builds upon the lessons learned from Odyssey’s launch and early operations.

According to Villa Vie, the new vessel will feature residences approximately 50% larger than comparable accommodations aboard Odyssey, along with expanded dining venues, larger public spaces, enhanced wellness facilities, and elevated amenities throughout the ship.

The announcement comes as Villa Vie says more than 85% of Odyssey has already been sold, a milestone the company says has made expansion to a second ship possible.

A Bigger Vision

Although Villa Vie has not revealed which vessel it plans to acquire, the company has outlined an ambitious vision for Legacy.

Among the announced improvements are:

• Residences approximately 50% larger than comparable Odyssey accommodations.
• Expanded dining venues.
• Larger public gathering spaces.
• Enhanced wellness and fitness facilities.
• Elevated amenities throughout the ship.

Villa Vie has also introduced its Legacy Bridge Program, allowing a limited number of buyers to begin living aboard Odyssey before transferring their ownership to Legacy once the new ship enters service.

Four-Legged Residents Welcome

One of the more intriguing details wasn’t buried in the press release itself, but rather in the promotional imagery accompanying the announcement.

A concept rendering of Legacy’s promenade deck carries the caption:

“Larger public spaces for life’s daily rituals. Four-legged residents included.”

For prospective residents, that simple statement could prove significant. I know it made my wife happy given we own a 3 year old Cavapoo, Ginger and were worried about separation anxiety on Avora (we purchased a unit on Avora). Although we intend to keep the unit, it gives us another option rather than separating for a month or two and having our Cavapoo complain about how hard her life has been with our adult children. 

The concept image also aligns with comments made previously by Villa Vie founder Mike Petterson during a webinar, where he discussed the possibility of accommodating dogs aboard a future ship. While Villa Vie has not yet released a formal pet policy for Legacy, the new promotional material strongly suggests pet-friendly living is now part of the company’s design vision.

For many would-be residents, the ability to travel the world without leaving a beloved pet behind could become one of Legacy’s most compelling features.

How Legacy Compares with Avora Lumina

Legacy’s announcement naturally invites comparisons with another residential cruise ship currently under development: Avora Lumina.

Although both projects target the growing residential cruise market, they are taking distinctly different approaches.

Villa Vie is evolving from the Odyssey platform by designing larger residences and expanded amenities while maintaining the community-oriented lifestyle that has defined its first ship.

Avora Lumina, by contrast, begins with a vessel that was originally built for the ultra-luxury cruise market.

The ship, formerly Seven Seas Navigator, already features all-suite accommodations, with most suites offering private balconies, walk-in closets and marble bathrooms. As a result, average accommodations aboard Lumina are expected to remain significantly larger than those planned for Legacy.

Rather than competing head-to-head, the two projects appear to be targeting different buyers. Villa Vie is emphasizing accessibility and long-term community, while Avora Lumina is focused on delivering a more traditional luxury residential experience.

Could Oceania’s Insignia Be the Mystery Ship?

Perhaps the biggest unanswered question surrounding Legacy is the identity of the ship itself.

Villa Vie has deliberately kept that information confidential.

Still, industry observers have begun comparing the announced specifications with ships that could become available over the next several years.

One vessel that naturally enters the conversation is Oceania Cruises’ Insignia.

Importantly, there is no public evidence that Villa Vie has acquired Insignia or is negotiating for the ship. However, its recent history makes it an interesting candidate.

When former Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Chairman Russell Galbut launched Crescent Seas in 2025, the company announced plans to convert two Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings vessels into residential cruise ships.

The first was Seven Seas Navigator, which ultimately became today’s Avora Lumina after Crescent Seas’ plans changed.

The second announced ship was Oceania Insignia.

Although Crescent Seas ultimately did not proceed with Insignia, the announcement demonstrated that experienced residential cruise developers believed the vessel possessed many of the characteristics desirable for long-term residential conversion.

Because Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings had already been willing to market Insignia for residential conversion, some industry observers believe it could remain a logical candidate for another developer should the opportunity arise.

Again, there is no evidence linking Villa Vie to Insignia, and any connection remains purely informed speculation. Nevertheless, the ship’s history makes it one of the more interesting possibilities as the industry waits for Villa Vie’s official announcement.

Looking Ahead

Villa Vie’s announcement represents more than simply adding another ship.

It signals growing confidence in the residential cruising sector.

With Odyssey nearing a sell-out, larger residences, expanded amenities, an apparent commitment to pet-friendly living, and a second ship entering the pipeline, Villa Vie is positioning itself for long-term growth.

For now, however, the biggest question remains unanswered.

What ship will become Villa Vie Legacy?

When Villa Vie finally reveals the vessel, it may become one of the most significant residential cruise announcements of the year.
